Unshakable Confidence: What My Son Taught Me About Success

Darryl teaches that unshakable confidence, not a better website or sharper script, is what really drives success for real estate agents.

by Darryl Davis, CSP

Let me ask you a direct question. Do you have unshakable confidence in the results you are going to produce in your career? Not a hope, not a wish, but a deep, quiet certainty that you will create what you set out to create. I want to tell you a story about my son, because he taught me something about that kind of confidence that I think every real estate professional needs to hear.

For those who do not know him, my son Michael Raymond is about to turn 30. He has always been in telephone sales. He has sold insurance over the phone, he has done business loans over the phone at a couple of different companies, and now he has landed on becoming a loan officer. He is not going into real estate, he is going where the money is, and I could not be prouder.

Here’s the thing: in every single one of those roles, his income has been north of 200,000 dollars a year. Give that young man a phone and something he believes in, and he hits it out of the park every time.

The question he always answers the same way

Now, every time Michael has made a career move, I have asked him the same question, partly as a dad and partly as a trainer: “How much do those folks make on average? What kind of income is realistic there?”

I ask because I want to understand the potential, what the career could do for him financially.

And every single time, he answers the same way. He says, “I don’t know, Dad. I don’t care. I don’t compare myself to other people.”

A Twist Worth Sharing

It happened again recently, but with a twist that made me want to share it with you. We were at a graduation party for a young woman who is like a stepdaughter to me, Raina. Michael had just passed his loan officer license and had not started prospecting yet, and at the party he got to talking with another loan officer about the firm, how business was going, all of it. So afterward I asked him if he had mentioned what he and his team pull in for income? Michael told me that he didn’t ask. Said it didn’t even occur to him and that he didn’t care.

As I got up to grab a coffee, I told him, “You know, I love it every time you answer that way.” When I came back, he wanted to know why. He asked me why I loved that about him. I told him the truth. I said, “As your dad, and as a trainer and coach, I ask those questions so I can understand what is possible. But you never care what other people are doing. You only know you. You are so confident you are going to create what you want that what anybody else does is irrelevant to you.”

And then he said something that got me right in the heart. He said, “Well, Dad, that’s probably because that’s how you brought me up. From very young, you taught me that anything is possible.”

All right, queue the proud dad emotion.

Why this matters for you

But here is the point of the story, and it is for you. My son does as well as he does, in whatever he takes on, for two reasons.

  1. He does not measure himself against anyone else. What other people produce has nothing, zero, to do with what he can produce. Comparison is a trap. The moment you anchor your expectations to someone else’s results; you have handed them control of your ceiling. Michael never does that, so his ceiling is wherever he decides it is.
  2. He is genuinely confident in what he can do. He knows who he is in his work. When he believes in the product, he conveys that belief to other people, and he does it with real passion. Belief is contagious, and so is doubt. People can feel which one you are carrying.

So, let me put the question back to you. When your business feels stuck, you start hunting for the fix in all the usual places. A better website. A slicker mailing piece. A sharper script. Newer software. Mastering AI. All of those things can help. But what if the real thing that is missing is not a tool at all? What if it starts with what you think of you?

Confidence is like the foundation of a house. You can put gorgeous finishes on every room, but if the foundation is cracked, the whole place feels unstable no matter how nice the fixtures are. Pour a solid foundation of belief in yourself, and suddenly all those tools and skills have something strong to stand on.

You do not need to be louder or flashier than the professional down the street. You need to stop watching them entirely, get clear on who you are, believe in what you offer, and convey that belief with passion. Do that, and the results tend to follow.

I hope this helped. Have a wonderful day, and of course, don’t forget to keep smiling. Oh, and if you need help? Click that chat button on the bottom of the screen. My team is a lot like my kid. Always ready to jump in!
