Real Estate Mindset: Don’t Let Fear Have You

A real estate mindset lesson from Darryl Davis: it is okay to have fear, just never let fear have you. Take it into the batting cage and swing anyway.

What is really holding you back in your real estate business? Most agents will point to the market, the interest rates, or the lack of leads. But after decades of coaching, I can tell you the real barrier is almost always the same, and it is a real estate mindset issue, not a market one. It is fear. And more precisely, it is the difference between having fear and letting fear have you. On this week’s POWER AGENT® coaching call, I shared a story I had not told in years, about my son, that gets to the heart of it, and by the end there were about a hundred of us a little teary. Let me share it with you.

Why Is Fear the Biggest Obstacle in Real Estate?

Before the story, understand what fear and a poor real estate mindset actually does to an agent’s business. It does not announce itself. It disguises itself as everything else:

  1. It hides behind excuses. The market is slow, the leads are bad, now is not the time. Often those excuses are just fear wearing a costume.
  2. It stops the activity that works. Prospecting calls, listing conversations, price reduction talks, the highest-value actions are usually the ones fear makes you avoid.
  3. It compounds with avoidance. Every time you skip the hard thing, the fear grows and the skill shrinks, so it gets harder, not easier.
  4. It masquerades as perfectionism. Waiting until you feel ready is often just fear buying time.
  5. It robs you of your life. Not just your business. Fear that runs your decisions quietly narrows everything you are willing to attempt.

Here is the reframe that changes everything. The goal is not to eliminate fear. The goal is to stop letting fear run the show. Let me show you what that looks like.

What Does It Mean to Have Fear Without Letting Fear Have You?

When my son Michael was young, I wanted to give him exposure to sports, so we signed him up for a youth baseball tryout. In the parking lot, a boy walked out dressed like a miniature all-star, full jersey, cleats, the works. Michael was in sweatpants and a t-shirt, and from the back seat he said, “Daddy, I do not feel very good.” Inside, the place was packed with kids and dads in team gear, and I will be honest, I started to feel like I wanted to go home too.

Then came the batting cage. A boy was already in there hitting every single ball, clearly gifted, dressed to the nines. My son watched him and turned to me with total conviction: “Daddy, we have to go.” Catch what was happening. My son was watching someone already successful at a thing he had never tried, and he was about to be asked to step into that cage alone and be judged. Imagine the fear a small child feels in that moment. It is the same fear a grown agent feels before a hard call, just in a smaller body.

I brought him to the bench and said a quiet prayer for the right words, because I believe our first moments become the template for how we handle the rest of our lives. Then I said, “Michael, you have seen Daddy stand in front of thousands of people all over the world. What I really do is help adults be better at what they do. And the number one thing that holds adults back is that they do not have fear. Fear has them. I want you to walk into that batting cage. I do not care if you even touch a ball. I just do not want fear to hold you back.” He looked at me and said, “Okay, Daddy.” He walked in, swung a lot, missed a lot, hit a few. An hour and a half later, sweaty and grinning, he said, “Daddy, thank you. I had fun today.” This is the mindset we build with our members every week inside the POWER Program® , because skills only matter if you have the courage to use them.

How Do You Push Through Fear as a Real Estate Agent?

Here is what I want for you this week. That call you have been avoiding, that listing conversation you keep postponing, that hard talk with a seller about price. That is your batting cage. You are allowed to be afraid. In fact, the thing you are most afraid to do is usually the exact thing you should do, because that is where the breakthrough lives. And this is the part agents miss: the exercise is not about the result of the at-bat. It is not about whether you hit the ball. It is about breaking through the fear itself. When you do the thing you are afraid to do, you have a breakthrough in not letting fear hold you back or rob you of your joy, no matter how the swing turns out.

So, take your fear with you into the cage, and swing anyway. Not swinging should not be an option for you. That is the POWER AGENT® mindset, and it is the foundation under every script and strategy we teach. For more on how mindset drives performance, the research on grit and resilience from sources like the Harvard Business Review echoes what agents feel every day: consistent action in the presence of fear is what builds a durable career.

What is the biggest obstacle to real estate success?

Fear, more than the market or lead sources. Fear stops agents from the high-value activities that grow a business, like prospecting calls and listing conversations. Learning to act despite fear is the single biggest driver of long-term success.

What does ‘don’t let fear have you’ mean?

It means you can feel fear without letting it control your decisions. Having fear is normal and human. Letting fear have you means it dictates what you will and will not do. The goal is to take action while the fear is present.

How do I overcome fear of prospecting or cold calling?

Reframe the goal. Success is not a perfect call, it is making the call at all. Do the thing you fear, focus on the courage of the swing rather than the outcome, and repeat it until the action becomes normal and the fear loses its grip.

Why does taking action matter more than the result?

Because the breakthrough is in breaking through the fear, not in the outcome of any single attempt. Each time you act despite fear, you build resilience that compounds, and that resilience outlasts any market cycle or individual rejection.

How can real estate coaching help with mindset?

Good coaching normalizes fear, reframes success as action, and holds you accountable to keep swinging. A supportive community and consistent encouragement make it far easier to do the hard things regularly, which is where lasting confidence and production come from.
